2x3 Colonial guinea pig cageWhat is the most important factor when selecting guinea pig cages? Space. Your piggies need room to run, room to romp – that’s right – room to roam. The minimum space recommended for two pigs by many guinea pig rescue organizations is 10.5 square feet. And since you should always keep at least two guinea pigs together (they’re social animals and need company); you should never be considering a cage any smaller than 10.5 square feet.

But what about those manufactured pet store cages? Aren’t they just fine? I mean – we see them everywhere. They have to be okay. Don’t they?

No they don’t. See for yourself.

Just look inside one of those manufactured cages. Imagine plopping your full-grown adult guinea pig in there. Clearly, she takes up a significant amount of space in there. Now add a nestbox, a hay rack, a water bottle and a feed dish — just to make things more comfortable for your pigs.  There’s no room to move around — no room for exercise — no room to run, romp or roam. And that’s without toys.

It’s been said before: Making your pig live in one of those cramped pet store guinea pig cages is like someone making you live your entire life in your bathroom.

And to make matters worse — there you were sitting quietly in your bathroom habitat and your owner decided that it would be a splendid idea to put a kitchen table and a refrigerator in there with you — just to make things more comfortable for you. Aren’t you beginning to feel just a little like a laboratory guinea pig stuffed into a rodent cage?

And remember…

There’s supposed to be at least two pigs in there.

2x4x3 Colonial Guinea Pig Cage with StorageAre you considering buying a guinea pig cage? Perhaps you should consider building your own cage – either from a kit or from scratch. With cubes and Coroplast (C&C) technology, you not only get a lot of cage for the money; you have the freedom to design and build the exact cage you want with custom innovative features.

With cubes and Coroplast cages, your design begins with 14” by 14” grids. From there, almost anything is possible. One of my favorite features in a C&C guinea pig cage is the Integral Storage feature.

In its simplest form, a C&C cage is simply a corral or pen for your pig. In other words, it is a corrugated plastic litter bin with a fence of grids built around it to form an enclosure. The advantage of this design is its incredible simplicity and low cost. This is the perfect design for those on a tight budget.

However, one huge drawback to this design is that it may be dangerous to place it on a table. With no bottom, all it takes is for a corner of the cage to slip over the edge of the table and it may pull the whole cage (including pigs) right down onto the floor. Thus, to insure your pigs’ safety, it is recommended that this type of cage only be placed on the floor. However, this may require you to kneel or sit on the floor to clean your cage.

One solution is to fasten the cage to a stand or pedestal in order to raise it off the floor.

Using the C&C approach, one can easily build an integral stand with built-in storage capability. One can simply build a two-story cage. The bottom story would contain no litter bin. And it can also be segmented into separate cubes or compartments to facilitate more organized storage.

Building a storage level such as this, will raise the living area of your cage 14-inches off the ground. An even better solution is to build two levels of storage. This will bring the living area to waist-level — the ideal level for cleaning and for interacting with your guinea pigs. And this will also create the perfect guinea pig cage for you – the pig owner.

Milllennium 200 guinea pig cageWhen I was a little kid, there were virtually two types of guinea pigs cages — manufactured and homemade. The manufactured cages were those tiny store-bought wire cages that would have looked more at home stacked in an animal testing research laboratory than they did housing a cherished family pet. They were small, lightweight and compact — too compact.

In contrast, the homemade units were a bulky and heavy conglomeration of two-by-fours, chicken wire and galvanized hardware. Back then, that ugly beast of a cage was called a guinea pig hutch. Back then pet store cages were mainly used to keep animals inside and hutches were used to house them outside.

Today, things are different. Yes, the grand division still exists between manufactured and homemade or home-assembled guinea pigs cages.  Yes, the old undersized, manufactured, pet store guinea pig cage is still around — a testament to the “old days” — those days when men were men and guinea pigs were mistreated little rodents.

But the old chicken wire guinea pig hutch has become quite uncommon in the guinea pig world. It is generally acknowledged that guinea pigs are not hearty enough to stand up to the temperature extremes encountered in North America. So relatively few choose to house their cavies outside permanently. In addition, most people find that bare two-by-fours and chicken wire often has a tendency to clash with the existing décor in their homes. As a consequence, few people are using wood and chicken wire enclosures to house their guinea pigs.

So the old wooden and wire beast has been essentially replaced by its newer, sleeker (dare I say “prettier”) cousin — the cubes and Coroplast (C&C) cage.

It’s easy to see that C&C guinea pigs cages offer all of the advantages of the old wood and chicken wire hutch — economy, scalability, customizability, a lot of cage for the money, and the plain old satisfaction that comes from building something yourself. But it goes beyond this. It is also sleeker, lighter, more sanitary, easy to clean and (dare I say it again?) “prettier” than do-it-yourself cages of yesterday.

2x3x2 Mini-Terrace Guinea Pig CageCan you remember seeing a guinea pig hutch when you were a kid? Remember that one kid (maybe it was you) that had that old wood and chicken wire beast-of-a-cage behind the house — or maybe behind the detached garage. Or perhaps it was a rabbit hutch. Whatever it was, chances are that poor little animal had a hard life trying to survive outside in most regions of the United States.

There was always a problem with water. In the summer, one always had to make sure there was plenty of water available so the animal didn’t dehydrate. And in the winter, one had to check to make sure the water didn’t freeze.

And, of course, the pet always looked uncomfortable. In summer the animal was too hot. And in winter, try as it may to burrow deeply into the hay for warmth, the poor creature always looked cold.

I have no way of proving it, but I suspect that that old wooden guinea pig hutch was responsible for the early demise of more than one family pet.

In general, back in those days, when we kept guinea pigs inside, we put them in those tiny little store-bought cages that were essentially nothing more than a small, cramped rodent cage. By today’s standards, they were much too small to hold a guinea pig or a rabbit.

If we wanted a big cage, we built a massive and cumbersome structure out of two-by-fours and chicken wire. It was too massive (and, let’s face it — too ugly) to keep in the house, so our family pets suffered outside.

Today’s counterpart is no longer called a guinea pig hutch. It’s called a C&C (cubes and Coroplast) cage. It is as roomy — often roomier — than the old chicken wire behemoth of yesteryear; but it is far less intrusive in terms of bulkiness and appearance. Today’s Coroplast cage is large enough to house your pigs comfortably yet attractive enough to place indoors.

That means that all of the BlueStoneCommerce guinea pig cage operations are closed down for a couple weeks!!!! This time we’re taking our college-age kids with us for part of the vacation. But don’t worry about all the pets (five pigs, one dog [Cosmo the Wonder Pig] and the two frogs). We have hired one of our kid’s friends to house-sit and take care of the BlueStone domestic menagerie. So the animals will all have care, feeding and companionship while we are sunning our buns in the Aloha state.

 

All of our cages will be back up for sale on
Friday March 9, 2011 and…

We will resume shipping on
Monday March 12, 2012

Yep, we’re headed off to Hawaii on February 23, 2012…

That means that we are going to close down guinea pig cage operations early next week (the week of Feb 19). So, if you’ve had your eye on one of our cages, you’d better act fast. Because we will be closing down for 2-3 weeks starting early next week. We will be resuming operations sometime in mid-March.

That means this weekend (Feb 18th and 19th) will be one of your final opportunities to purchase a BlueStoneCommerce C&C guinea pig cage before we shut down for our tropical trek. (As I said, your next opportunity will be mid-March). This time we’re taking our college-age kids with us for part of the vacation. Looking forward to escaping the Michigan weather. Sure – we’ve had a mild winter here in Michigan. But a mild winter in Michigan means 35 – 40 degrees. A mild winter in Hawaii means 79 – 80 degrees.

I think that’s an improvement.
