2x3 Colonial guinea pig cageWhat is the most important factor when selecting guinea pig cages? Space. Your piggies need room to run, room to romp – that’s right – room to roam. The minimum space recommended for two pigs by many guinea pig rescue organizations is 10.5 square feet. And since you should always keep at least two guinea pigs together (they’re social animals and need company); you should never be considering a cage any smaller than 10.5 square feet.

But what about those manufactured pet store cages? Aren’t they just fine? I mean – we see them everywhere. They have to be okay. Don’t they?

No they don’t. See for yourself.

Just look inside one of those manufactured cages. Imagine plopping your full-grown adult guinea pig in there. Clearly, she takes up a significant amount of space in there. Now add a nestbox, a hay rack, a water bottle and a feed dish — just to make things more comfortable for your pigs.  There’s no room to move around — no room for exercise — no room to run, romp or roam. And that’s without toys.

It’s been said before: Making your pig live in one of those cramped pet store guinea pig cages is like someone making you live your entire life in your bathroom.

And to make matters worse — there you were sitting quietly in your bathroom habitat and your owner decided that it would be a splendid idea to put a kitchen table and a refrigerator in there with you — just to make things more comfortable for you. Aren’t you beginning to feel just a little like a laboratory guinea pig stuffed into a rodent cage?

And remember…

There’s supposed to be at least two pigs in there.

We have hired one of our kid’s friends to house-sit and take care of the BlueStone domestic menagerie. So the animals will all have care, feeding and companionship while we are sunning our buns in the Aloha state.

Yep, we’re headed off to Hawaii on February 23, 2012…

That means that we are going to close down guinea pig cage operations early next week (the week of Feb 19). So, if you’ve had your eye on one of our cages, you’d better act fast. Because we will be closing down for 2-3 weeks starting early next week. We will be resuming operations sometime in mid-March.

That means this weekend (Feb 18th and 19th) will be one of your final opportunities to purchase a BlueStoneCommerce C&C guinea pig cage before we shut down for our tropical trek. (As I said, your next opportunity will be mid-March). This time we’re taking our college-age kids with us for part of the vacation. The Concept Behind Space-Saver Cages for Guinea Pigs

Mega-Tower-Space-Saver-Cages for guinea pigsMost people have the wrong idea about space-saving. To them space-saver means “less space”. Space-saver means “smaller”. But not to us.

The concept behind BlueStoneCommerce’s line of space-saver cages is to deliver a roomy and spacious cage in a product form that can fit in a small footprint.

Yep. It’s a good idea – but not one we can really say we originally invented…

The Cage Design Inspired by Manhattan Property Values

Suppose you wanted to build a building in Manhattan – and you needed a lot of space… say, an area equal to 36 square city blocks. Would you buy up a plot of land six-blocks by six-blocks and build a sprawling single-story structure?

Of course not. Too expensive. The footprint is much too large. It takes up too much real estate.

So, instead, you build a building one-block by one-block and 36-stories high… or 56-stories… or 100. We call that a skyscraper. It’s footprint is only one city-block but it can contain many tens of thousands of square-feet. (The Empire State building contains just under 3-million square feet.)

“The Flat-Screen TV of Guinea Pig Cages”

Besides employing the multi-level “skyscraper concept” our Tower and Mega-Tower models were also designed with a long, thin footprint. This thin design allows the cage to hug the wall – as you can see in the photo above.

We like to say that our “Tower” line of cages does for the guinea pig cage what the flat-screen did for TVs.

The Demise of Big Guinea Pig Cages

So, with the invention of the slim-line space-saver cages for guinea pigs, you might conclude that there is no longer a need for large-footprint cages. Not true.

All-in-all, a big guinea cages are still better for your guinea pigs health and well-being. Would you rather run on a quarter-mile track (large footprint) or back and forth on a drag strip (narrow footprint). Yes, you can still get just as much exercise on the drag strip – but it’s just annoying to make that abrupt turn at the end each time.

Good, Bester, Besterest (and Worsterest)

In terms of your pigs health and well-being, a large footprint cage is best. And for multiple pigs – multiple stories are recommended. Hey, pigs are people too. We all feel better and more comfy in a large roomy house. And, once in a while we need to get away to our own private room or maybe to a different floor.

If you don’t have the room for a large cage, the space-saver cavy cage is the next-best choice. Each individual level is smaller than a large-footprint cage, so it’s not the optimal choice. But the total amount of living space is far more than that found in manufactured pet store cages. It’s a great choice for an apartment, dorm room, kid’s room or to fit in a small nook like that shown in the photo above.

I’ve said it before. Putting your pig in a small pet store cage is like you living out your entire life in your bathroom. We did it to our first guinea pig (back then we didn’t know any better) and… after we’ve seen the remarkable changes in our pigs’ moods and energy levels… we’ll never do it again.

“Here”? “There”? Don’t know, don’t care - either way – we’re not home. All I know is that for the first time in weeks, I can look out the window and not see snow. I see white – but it’s not snow. When I lay on the ground, I make sand angels - not snow angels (sadly, my sandman wasn’t much to look at).

So now, as I write this, we’re one hour behind (time zone) and 30 degrees ahead (heat zone) of our home in Michigan… and that’s a good thing.

So, enough about Nancy and I – what about you? Looking for a C&C cage? Well – good news – we’re still in business while we’re down here in Florida absorbing more than our share of deadly ultraviolet rays. We packed a limited (but hopefully adequate) number of cages before we hopped the plane back in Michigan. Like last time, we have arranged for our trusty and faithful UPS guys to fulfill orders for us while we’re gone.

We still have a full selection as of today.

Relationship-saving public service hint: today is Valentines Day (Men: save yourselves – quickly – while you still can).

But they (the cages – not men) are going faster than we anticipated  (we sold five cages just while we were on the plane flying down here). Some of our more popular models are down to a single unit left.
